Mottaki, Solana discuss EU-Iran ties, intl. issues
"We had a very friendly and frank talks about different issues about our region, the Middle East, Iraq, Afghanistan, relations between Iran and the EU, and the nuclear issue," Mottaki told reporters after the meeting.
"We raised our concern about the problem of cartoons. We accepted to cooperate with each other to calm down the situation," he said.
Solana briefed the Iranian foreign minister on the outcome of his recent trip to the Middle East and his meetings with some Islamic leaders to calm the situation.
On Iraq, Mottaki said Iran supports the political trends and the government which will be formed.
He said there should be some kind of a timetable for withdrawal of foreign occupation troops from Iraq and an end to terrorist attacks.
"The Islamic Republic of Iran believes that controlling security of Iraq and Afghanistan should be localized by their governments."
On the nuclear issue, he said the EU supports a solution between Iran and Russia if it takes place.
"We must reach and confirm some formula to realize the right of Iran to enjoy from its membership of the NPT -- which is having nuclear technology."
Mottaki said it is unacceptable that countries which possess nuclear weapons and have used nuclear weapons should prohibit others from having a nuclear program for peaceful purposes.
"We are ready for any new ideas to reach to some compromise," he said.
"Maybe the EU is waiting for the current negotiations between Iran and Russia which started today," Mottaki added.
The Iranian foreign minister arrived in Brussels Monday morning for a one-day visit at the invitation of the foreign relations committee of the European Parliament.
